Turkish Technic has opened its seventh hangar at Istanbul’s Atatürk Airport, raising the company’s simultaneous aircraft maintenance capacity in the city to 57 aircraft. According to the company’s announcement dated August 22, 2026, and reports from Anadolu Agency and aviation publication Haber Aero, the refurbished facility covers 29,400 square metres. It can accommodate two narrow-body aircraft and one wide-body aircraft at the same time.
The verified capacity of the new hangar
The facility entered service as Turkish Technic’s seventh hangar at Atatürk Airport. Its stated capacity is based on three maintenance positions within the hangar: two for narrow-body aircraft and one for a wide-body aircraft. This configuration gives a concrete measure of the project’s scale and allows different aircraft types to be scheduled in the same maintenance complex.
Turkish Technic said the project would take its total enclosed facility area in Istanbul above 850,000 square metres. The figure of 57 aircraft refers to the company’s combined simultaneous maintenance capacity across Istanbul, rather than to the new hangar alone. The new building’s three positions and the citywide total therefore describe two different measures.
An older facility was modernised
Anadolu Agency reported that the structure was originally built with the technology available in 1996 and had been out of use for a period. It was refurbished in line with the company’s expansion plans and equipped to meet current quality standards. Turkish Technic’s own announcement presents the investment as an addition that strengthens its maintenance base in Istanbul.
Aircraft maintenance, repair and overhaul services are commonly grouped under the term MRO. A larger hangar gives the operator physical room to accept more aircraft for scheduled work at the same time. It does not, however, guarantee a specific annual number of completed checks, a fixed increase in revenue or shorter turnaround times. Those results depend on the type of maintenance, aircraft model, parts availability and operating schedules.
Training space is part of the project
The development is not limited to aircraft bays. Turkish Technic said classrooms would be included in the facility so that theoretical instruction can be connected with practical maintenance work under the same roof. That training component is intended to support the development of future aviation professionals alongside the expanded technical operation.
No detailed announcement has yet set out the size of the training intake, the courses to be offered or a start date for those programmes. It would therefore be premature to attach a specific student number or timetable to the facility. The verified point is that classrooms are planned and that the company intends to link classroom learning with field experience.
Support for the THY fleet and external customers
The company expects the added capacity to strengthen support for Turkish Airlines’ expanding fleet and create more room for international customers. That statement describes the purpose of the investment, not a confirmed contract with a named foreign airline. No additional revenue figure tied specifically to the new hangar was announced.
Maintenance capacity matters because airlines need available slots for required checks and technical work. Actual use of the facility will still depend on demand, certification scope, staffing and shift planning. The opening confirms an increase in physical capacity, while the operational effect will become measurable through later company disclosures.
What to monitor next
Useful indicators will include the number of aircraft serviced each year, the share of international customers, training activity and the utilisation rate of the new facility. Turkish Technic has not published current targets for all of those measures. Forecasts about employment, exports or revenue should therefore be kept separate from the facts announced with the opening.
The confirmed development is that the 29,400-square-metre seventh hangar is operational and that Turkish Technic’s simultaneous maintenance capacity in Istanbul has risen to 57 aircraft. The longer-term production and training results will require additional data from the company.
