The 20th Mediterranean Games in Taranto, Italy, moved into their competition programme after the opening ceremony on 21 August. According to delegation information published by the Turkish Olympic Committee, Team Türkiye is represented by 334 athletes: 137 women and 197 men. The Games continue until 3 September at venues across Taranto and the wider Puglia region.
Türkiye brings a broad delegation
The Turkish Olympic Committee says the country will be represented in every sport except handball. The multi-sport format spreads the delegation across many venues and competition days. Athletics, swimming, gymnastics, wrestling, fencing, cycling and team events are staged in stadiums, indoor halls, pools and outdoor locations. Each discipline has its own preliminary, group and final schedule, so the daily programme needs to be checked separately.
The International Committee of Mediterranean Games said 3,854 athletes from 26 national Olympic committees would participate. That figure illustrates the scale of an event that is regional in identity but extensive in operation. The organising committee notes that competitions are being held not only in central Taranto but also at facilities across several communities in Puglia. Delegations enter competition on different dates throughout a programme lasting almost two weeks.
Opening ceremony and timetable
The opening ceremony took place at the Erasmo Iacovone Stadium. Wrestler Nesrin Baş and swimmer Emre Sakçı carried the Turkish flag during the delegation parade. The first contests and group matches followed, while different sports begin and finish on separate dates. Starting lists can change because of withdrawals or programme adjustments, so event-day records should be checked in addition to the initial delegation figures.
Taranto 2026 publishes programme, venue and event information in dedicated sections of its official website. That timetable should be treated as the main reference for session times or changes. With events distributed across multiple cities, competitions can take place simultaneously at different locations. Announcements from the relevant sports federations provide another official channel for checking athlete lists, sessions and confirmed results.
How the Games are organised
The Mediterranean Games bring together athletes from countries bordering the Mediterranean or represented within the International Committee of Mediterranean Games. Held every four years, the event includes established Olympic sports and disciplines with particular regional interest. The Taranto edition is the 20th staging of the Games. The international committee’s total is built from delegations entered through the participating national Olympic committees.
For Türkiye, the event gives a large group of national-team athletes an international competition setting and places many sports in the public eye at the same time. Medal expectations, however, should not be reported as results before events are complete. Official outcomes must be checked through the relevant federations, the Turkish Olympic Committee and the Taranto 2026 results system. A qualifying mark, final position or medal should be treated as confirmed only after the completed session appears in an official record.
