Paramount Pictures is developing a live-action film set in the universe of CD Projekt RED’s Cyberpunk 2077, extending one of modern gaming’s largest science-fiction franchises into theatrical cinema. The project is being developed with veteran producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura, while CD Projekt RED is involved in the collaboration. No director, cast, production schedule or release date has been announced.
The film was first reported by Deadline on 8 October and was subsequently confirmed in reporting by Reuters, The Verge and TheWrap. CD Projekt RED joint chief executive Michał Nowakowski said Paramount shared the company’s creative ambitions for the franchise and that more information would be released at an appropriate time. Paramount had not provided additional public production details when the reports were published.
A new story in the Cyberpunk universe
The available announcements describe the project as a film set in the Cyberpunk 2077 universe rather than a direct scene-by-scene retelling of the 2020 game. That distinction leaves open whether the story will feature established characters such as V or Johnny Silverhand, explore another period in Night City, or introduce an entirely new cast. None of those possibilities has been confirmed, and the current reporting does not establish whether actors from the game will appear.
Lorenzo di Bonaventura has produced large-scale action and science-fiction franchises, including films in the Transformers series. His involvement signals that Paramount is treating the project as a theatrical production, but development remains an early stage. Projects at this point can change writers, directors, creative scope and release timing before filming begins. The announcement therefore confirms development, not that cameras are already rolling or that a premiere date has been fixed.
Cyberpunk 2077 has sold more than 40 million copies, while its Phantom Liberty expansion has passed 15 million sales, according to figures cited by Reuters and The Verge. Those numbers help explain the commercial appeal of a film adaptation. The game’s launch in December 2020 was marked by major technical problems, particularly on older consoles, but CD Projekt RED continued updating it and later expanded the story through Phantom Liberty.
A franchise already expanding beyond games
The Cyberpunk property has already moved beyond the original role-playing game. Netflix’s animated Cyberpunk: Edgerunners broadened the audience for Night City, and a second animated season is scheduled to premiere on 20 October 2026. CD Projekt RED is also developing a video-game sequel currently referred to as Cyberpunk 2. Reuters reported that 184 developers were working on the sequel as of 31 July, although no launch date has been announced.
CD Projekt RED had previously announced a live-action Cyberpunk project with Anonymous Content in 2023. The latest reports do not clearly explain whether Paramount’s film replaces that initiative, grew from it or is a separate production. Until the companies provide a fuller production announcement, the relationship between the projects should not be assumed.
The news briefly lifted CD Projekt RED’s shares by about 3% in early Friday trading, according to Reuters. The market response reflects expectations that a major film could sustain attention around the franchise while the next game remains in development. However, no budget, distribution timetable or box-office forecast has been disclosed.
For now, the verified development is limited but significant: Paramount is working with CD Projekt RED and Lorenzo di Bonaventura on a live-action Cyberpunk 2077 film. Casting, the precise story, filming dates and release plans remain unannounced. Those details will determine whether the adaptation follows the game’s familiar characters or uses Night City as the setting for a new cinematic story.
