Türkiye introduces a new diesel tax schedule
Türkiye has set the fixed special consumption tax on diesel-type fuels at zero lira per litre from August 13 through the end of the month. The presidential decision took effect after publication in the Official Gazette. Turkish business newspapers Dünya and Yeni Asır reported that the temporary zero rate will be followed by a graduated tax schedule beginning in September. The decision applies to diesel products; the published reports did not announce the same change for gasoline or liquefied petroleum gas.
Under the schedule, the fixed tax will be 3 lira per litre in September, 6 lira in October, 9 lira in November and 12 lira in December. These figures describe the tax component for each month. They do not guarantee that the retail pump price will move by exactly the same amount. Fuel prices also depend on product costs, exchange rates, refinery and distribution charges, other taxes and decisions made by retailers.
What changed in the fuel-price mechanism?
Dünya reported that diesel was removed from the relevant part of Türkiye's mobile sliding-scale tax system. That mechanism had been used to absorb part of fuel-cost increases through adjustments to the special consumption tax, limiting the immediate effect on pump prices. The new decision instead provides a visible month-by-month fixed tax schedule for diesel. Unless another decision changes it, the tax component will follow the amounts listed through December.
For the remaining days of August, one defined part of the tax burden on diesel has therefore been reduced to zero. Any effect seen by consumers will appear through price updates issued by distributors and filling stations. Reports have pointed to the potential for lower prices, but a single nationwide retail figure would be misleading. Prices can differ by city, company and station because transport costs and commercial policies are not identical.
The tax returns in stages from September
The second phase begins on September 1, when the fixed tax is scheduled to return at 3 lira per litre. It will then rise by another 3 lira in each of the following three months, reaching 12 lira in December. The amounts are fixed currency values per litre, not percentage rates. The schedule remains subject to any future presidential decision that may amend it.
The final effect on budget revenue, inflation and transportation costs cannot yet be measured from completed data. It would therefore be premature to claim that the decision will reduce inflation by a specific amount or lower every consumer price equally. Diesel is widely used in freight and passenger transport, giving it an important role in costs, but the outcome will also depend on consumption, international refined-product prices and movements in the Turkish lira.

The confirmed information for drivers is limited and clear: the fixed diesel special consumption tax is zero between August 13 and August 31, and it is scheduled to return gradually from September. Consumers comparing prices should use the current tariff displayed by each station. A price shared on social media should not be assumed to apply across the entire country.

Energy-market announcements from Türkiye's regulator and fuel distributors can provide additional price information. The current decision creates a temporary zero-tax period for the rest of August and a staged return through the end of the year.
