Turkey's Bayraktar KIZILELMA unmanned combat aerial vehicle has successfully test-fired TEBER-82 and TOLUN munitions from its internal weapons station, a milestone that boosts its stealth and operational effectiveness.
The Stealth Advantage of an Internal Bay
Defense industry expert Ahmet Alemdar explained that internal weapon stations are a defining feature of fifth-generation fighters and advanced UCAVs, setting them apart from fourth-generation platforms. 'When munitions are carried internally, the aircraft's radar cross-section is significantly reduced. In this test, Baykar didn't just demonstrate technology; it showcased a combat system that enemy radars will detect much later,' he said.
Seeing Without Being Seen
External stores make an aircraft more visible and increase drag, affecting speed and range. Additionally, at high speeds, wing-mounted loads generate aerodynamic heating that can be picked up by infrared search and track (IRST) systems. KIZILELMA, which is equipped with its own IRST, can now monitor threats passively while firing from the internal bay, eliminating that thermal signature. 'This allows it to see without being seen and strike without being struck,' Alemdar noted.
ASELSAN's Multi-Rack Launcher
The test utilized a special launcher developed by ASELSAN, capable of carrying four munitions per station. These can include armor-piercing concrete-penetrating bombs or missiles with electronic warfare capabilities. 'With this multi-rack system, KIZILELMA has become even more strategic,' Alemdar said.
Future Plans and Global Interest
Alemdar hinted that air-to-air missile firings from the internal station are likely in upcoming tests. He also underscored the drone's export success: its sale to Indonesia marked the world's first export of an unmanned combat aircraft. 'There's strong international interest in this flagship project, and even requests for partnership. Baykar will first deliver it to the Turkish Armed Forces, then to Turkey's strategic friends and allies,' he concluded.
