What creates the Perseids?
The shower occurs when Earth passes through a stream of particles left along the orbit of comet 109P/Swift-Tuttle. According to NASA, those particles enter the atmosphere at high speed and produce bright streaks. The shower appears to radiate from the direction of the constellation Perseus, which gives the Perseids their name. The visible streaks are produced by small comet particles, not stars falling toward Earth.
The shower is not limited to its busiest night. NASA’s Perseid page describes an annual activity period extending from mid-July into late August. Activity declines after the peak, but individual Perseid meteors may still be visible on later nights when the sky is clear and dark. That wider period means local cloud cover on the main night does not necessarily eliminate every opportunity to observe the shower.
Basic viewing conditions in Türkiye
A telescope or binoculars are not required because a wide view of the sky is more useful. A safe, permitted location with an open horizon and less urban lighting may improve visibility. Avoiding bright phone screens and direct lights for a while allows the eyes to adapt to darkness. Weather and local cloud cover remain decisive factors, even during a year with favorable Moon conditions.
Eclipse glasses are not used for a meteor shower. The Perseids are observed in the night sky with the unaided eye. Observers should still choose familiar and permitted locations and follow ordinary nighttime safety precautions. A published hourly rate does not mean the same number will be visible from every city or during every hour of the night.
Why were local conditions decisive?
Official astronomy calendars identify the peak night, but they cannot guarantee visibility in a particular city. Clouds, haze, nearby artificial lighting and an obstructed horizon affect whether faint trails can be noticed. The most reliable approach is to combine the time window supplied by TÜBİTAK and NASA with local weather and conditions at the observing site. A brief viewing session may not represent the entire night.
Although the maximum has passed, the activity continues through late August. People who missed the main night may still see fewer Perseids during later clear nights. The TÜBİTAK and NASA calendars agree on the peak window, while neither source can guarantee a specific count at an individual location.
