Fenerbahçe drew 1-1 away to Polish side Górnik Zabrze in the second leg of their UEFA Champions League second qualifying-round tie. Having won the opening match 1-0 in Istanbul, the yellow-and-navy side advanced with a 2-1 aggregate victory.
Talisca strikes early
At Stadion im. Ernesta Pohla in Zabrze, Fenerbahçe took an early lead. Anderson Talisca converted a penalty in the 12th minute to make it 1-0 on the night. The goal extended the Turkish club’s aggregate advantage to two and left the home side needing at least two goals to change the outcome of the tie.
Górnik Zabrze began to take more risks late in the first half and responded during a lengthy period of stoppage time. Matěj Sáček equalised in the ninth added minute, finishing after an assist from Emanuel Prekop. The teams went into the interval level at 1-1, while Fenerbahçe remained 2-1 ahead across the two matches.
Advantage protected after the break
The score remained level throughout the second half. One more Górnik goal would have forced extra time, so Fenerbahçe had to manage the closing stages carefully. The visitors protected the narrow advantage earned in Istanbul and prevented the Polish side from finding the second goal it required.
The final whistle confirmed a 1-1 draw in the return leg. Fenerbahçe did not need an away victory because the 1-0 result from the first match made a draw sufficient under the two-leg format. Their lead survived from the opening match until the end of the tie.
Two Talisca goals across the tie
Talisca supplied both of Fenerbahçe’s goals in the contest. In Istanbul, he scored from a free kick in the 37th minute to secure the 1-0 first-leg win. In Poland, his 12th-minute penalty strengthened the aggregate position before Sáček levelled on the night.
The combination of a first-leg victory and a second-leg draw produced a 2-1 aggregate score. Fenerbahçe therefore earned the right to continue in UEFA Champions League qualifying and move into the next stage of the competition.
