Türkiye’s General Directorate of Meteorology, known as MGM, issued a strong-wind and storm warning for northern and eastern Marmara on Thursday, August 13, 2026. Winds from the north and northeast may reach 50-70 kilometers per hour, with local gusts near 80 kilometers per hour. The warning is valid from 9:00 a.m. until 11:59 p.m. The highest estimate is local and does not mean that every location will continuously record that speed.
Eight provinces are covered
The notice names Istanbul, Kırklareli, Edirne, Tekirdağ, Bursa, Yalova, Kocaeli and Sakarya. The Istanbul Regional Forecast and Warning Center also expects localized showers and thunderstorms in the eastern part of the region. The same wind intensity is not expected everywhere at the same time. Coastal exposure, terrain, buildings and wind direction can create different conditions over short distances.
MGM lists falling trees or utility poles, roof damage and transport disruption among the possible effects. This is a risk list attached to the forecast, not confirmation that those incidents have already occurred. A road closure, service cancellation or change to a public service becomes official only when the responsible organization issues a separate announcement.
Rain is also possible around Istanbul
The regional forecast for August 13 calls for intermittent, localized showers in Istanbul, Kocaeli, Sakarya and Yalova. Istanbul’s maximum temperature is expected to reach 30 degrees Celsius, while visibility may decline during rain. The location and duration of showers may vary between districts. The regional wording does not mean uninterrupted rain at every point throughout the day.
A morning report by Cumhuriyet, based on MGM data, says showers are also expected across parts of northern Türkiye and the Mediterranean. It identifies potentially strong local rain around Sinop, Samsun, Ordu and Giresun, while strong winds are the main concern for Marmara and the northern Aegean. The nationwide outlook and the specific Marmara notice have different scopes.
How should the forecast be read?
The phrase “locally near 80 kilometers per hour” does not mean that every city will continuously record the maximum speed. A regional warning does not replace observations for a particular district. Calm weather in one place does not invalidate the warning elsewhere. In the same way, one brief strong gust does not prove that the entire warning period will remain equally severe.
The official notice supports extra caution around unsecured outdoor objects, signs, roofs and trees. Travelers may wish to check current announcements from ferry, road and public transport operators. Old or unidentified social-media footage should not be treated as evidence of conditions on August 13 without a verified time and location.
A warning is not an incident report
Weather warnings describe risks that forecast conditions could create. Listing a possible effect does not mean that it will definitely occur. A temporary reduction in wind does not prove that the warning has ended. Current observations and the agency’s regional forecast should be read as separate but related information.
The verified elements are the wind-speed range, named provinces and validity period. Claims about damage, closures or cancellations require confirmation from the authority responsible for that service or location. Keeping this distinction clear helps prevent isolated social-media posts from being mistaken for conditions across the whole region.
Transport notices remain separate
The storm warning does not automatically cancel every ferry, flight or road service. Operators may make route-specific decisions. Travelers should check the responsible company or authority before departure and compare the date and service number. An old cancellation image reposted without context can create a false impression about current conditions.
Public events are handled in the same way. Organizers and local authorities issue any specific change or cancellation. The MGM warning provides the regional hazard context, but it does not replace those decisions. Reporting should separate the forecast, recommended caution and confirmed operational action.
New official updates take priority
The current notice gives 11:59 p.m. on August 13 as the scheduled end time. MGM may update, expand, extend or withdraw it if the weather system changes. People should not assume that it has ended early simply because conditions temporarily appear calmer. A newer official notice takes priority over earlier screenshots.
The most reliable approach is to follow MGM’s warning page, the Istanbul regional forecast and announcements from local authorities together. Based on the current official material, the central message is to remain alert for strong winds and localized storm conditions across the eight named provinces, without presenting possible impacts as events that have already happened.
